Client: Isla Duncan Edinburgh College of Art. Consulting Engineers: Blackwood Partnership. Lighting Design: Caroline Mowat & Blackmoon Lighting. Images courtesy of Stewart Guthrie. Sculpture Court Lighting Edinburgh College of Art. The Sculpture Court of the College of Art is situated in the oldest building on the campus and continues to be the focal point of the campus, even now in its centenary year. The Sculpture Court is a two storey space with a balcony at first floor level and a large rooflight which covers most of the floor area. It originally housed the College’s collection of plaster casts of classic statues but now is more often used for in house exhibitions, leased for events or is the venue for International Festival exhibitions. It is also part of the main circulation route within the building and between the different parts of the campus. Each of the diverse uses of the space requires its own type of lighting. Along with the various types of lighting comes the requirement for energy conservation, ease of maintenance and the limitation of wiring in an old and Category A listed building. Of the various proposals put forward by lighting manufacturers a mixture of different elements from three were considered to meet the brief. Targetti provided- • 3 circuit track with Foho Projectors to meet the floor space display lighting and highlight the columns • High level Foho Projectors to flood the very centre of the space • Narrow beam Foho Projectors fitted on short lengths of track at high level between the arches of the corridors for lighting three dimensional displays. The three circuit track which carries the spotlighting for displays is fitted discreetly on a cornice at first floor level. This carries Foho 230V Projectors (with various beam angles) which meet the onerous requirements of lighting display screens or individual pieces of art situated below on any part of the Court floor. This track also carries narrow beam Foho Projectors which highlight the pairs of columns surrounding the Court at first floor level. The installation was carried out by Pratt Bros. (Scotland) Ltd.
